HAPPY NATIONAL POETRY MONTH!! You didn’t think I forgot, did you? Of course not!

I’m excited about this month because it means some of my favorite poets are providing writing prompts every day to help jump start your writing. This is such an amazing idea that I thought I’d provide a few prompts of my own:

  1. Think of a favorite childhood memory. Write it down. The tiniest detail – the smell, feel, taste of it.
  2. Think about your first love. Write his/her specific traits – the ones you loved and the ones you hated.
  3. Think of your current love. Write about one of his/her specific traits that you do not like. Now write a love poem to that hated trait.
  4. Look outside your window. Describe it to me as if I were blind – don’t leave out anything!
  5. Write about your favorite story about your parents. Don’t have one? Make it up and pretend it’s real.
  6. Use the following sentence to start a poem: It would never be easy.
  7. Use a garden as a metaphor in a poem.
  8. Write a poem with the title “Hands”.
  9. Write a poem in which the reason for the title isn’t apparent until the end.
  10. Write  a poem about a object that has value to you – sentimental, monetary, any sort of value.

Now pick up your pen and start writing!
